With actresses Meg Ryan and Angelina Jolie in the spotlight adopting children internationally, adoption is becoming a household word. One not so famous adoptive mom is happy to see more interest in adoption and has dedicated herself to making a difference in the world one child at a time.
Her name is Robin Bartko of Elkridge, MD and she and her husband have started a new web site, http://www.ThinkingOfAdopting.com, to help people who are considering adoption. Her mission — to help more children get homes by providing information and inspiration to prospective adoptive parents.
ThinkingOfAdopting.com is unique in the world of adoption web sites because it allows prospective parents to talk live with adoptive parents and experts, providing them with personal answers to their questions from the privacy of their home. Robin says, “You just can’t get the same level of insight and information from e-mails and web postings as you can by talking live with others who have been through the process.”
She is currently holding “Adoption Help Sessions” along with adoption telecourses and webinars on topics including medical aspects of international adoption, financing adoption, and attachment. Robin Bartko found that the most useful information during her adoption process was not necessarily given to her from adoption agencies. The most useful information came from other adoptive parents and the adoption community. Robin herself admits, “If it wasn’t for a few wonderful adoptive parents who helped me, I am not sure I would have had the courage to take the leap of faith and adopt my son.” She wants to help families learn more about adoption from the real experts — adoptive parents.
Robin will help people learn more about adopting any country that is of interest to them. Robin says, “Once you have been to an orphanage or have seen a local foster care program, you realize what a need there is for these kids to get homes of their own”. No one knows how many orphans are in the world, but it is estimated well over 100 million.
